The Cyclocross European Championships are coming to the Achterhoek region: Zeddam will be the battleground 20 years after the World Championships

The European Cyclo-cross Championships will come to the Netherlands, to the Achterhoek region, in 2026. The battle for the coveted white-and-blue jerseys will rage in the municipality of Montferland on November 7 and 8 between the best European cyclocross riders. With this European Championship, Zeddam is once again attracting an international cyclocross race to the region, 20 years after the phenomenal Cyclocross World Championship. With this allocation, the Achterhoek region strengthens its status as a host for international top sporting events, and the municipality of Montferland, which includes Zeddam, further strengthens its position as a cycling centre.

This event marks a historical milestone: 20 years after the successful 2006 World Cyclo-Cross Championships, we are once again the setting for this top sporting event.

“The municipality of Montferland is proud to host the 2026 UEC Cyclo-cross European Championships in Zeddam, surrounded by its beautiful landscape.” Says Marije Eleveld, Councilor Sport in de Municipality of Montferland. . “This event marks a historical milestone: 20 years after the successful 2006 World Cyclo-Cross Championships, we are once again the setting for this top sporting event. Together with the other 8 Achterhoek municipalities, we are enthusiastically committed to this special event and look forward to a sporty and successful championship!”

Pascal Kamperman, Director-Manager of Achterhoek in Beweging, also emphasises the intensive cooperation between the various municipalities: “It is wonderful that this international top sporting event is coming to Zeddam – Achterhoek. This gives us the opportunity to show the social value of top sport. We can only receive such top sporting events if there is regional cooperation and the pride of the Achterhoek flourishes. In addition to top sport in that weekend, we will also start working on an activation program with attention for social themes such as unique sports, cycling safety and cooperation in cycling in the Achterhoek.”

The pride of the Achterhoek flourishes

The organisation is in the hands of Golazo Events Nederland. “Every year we organise a series of leading cyclocross races, mainly in Belgium. With the UEC Cyclo-cross European Championships in Zeddam, we are bringing our extensive expertise in the field of cyclo-cross to the Netherlands,” says Wilbert Lek, Managing Director Events. “For example Erwin Vervecken, the former cyclocross world champion from 2006, is involved as a course designer. The famous staircase in Zeddam will once again play an important role in 2026.”

The European Cycling Federation UEC is also convinced of the choice for Zeddam. UEC President Enrico Della Casa: “We are very excited about the preparations for the 2026 UEC Cyclo-cross European Championships, which will be held in Zeddam, in the picturesque municipality of Montferland in the Netherlands. Not only is this region steeped in a real passion for cycling, but it is also steeped in a tradition that has always contributed to writing important pages in the history of our sport.

The choice of Montferland for this event is no coincidence with the beauty of the area, the warmth of the enthusiasts and the extraordinary organisational experience of the region make it an ideal setting to welcome the continent’s best athletes.

I would like to express our deep gratitude to the municipality of Montferland, Achterhoek in Beweging, the province of Gelderland, the Dutch Cycling Federation and its President Maurice Leeser, as well as the experienced team of organisers at Golazo. Thanks to this synergy, the 2026 Cyclo-Cross European Championships promise to be an unforgettable event that will further enhance the essence of this extraordinary discipline.

We are convinced that Zeddam and Montferland in will be able to welcome the athletes, fans and enthusiasts in the best possible way, offering a unique spectacle that will honour not only Cyclo-cross, but European cycling as a whole.”
